इरोम शर्मिला के फास्ट अनटू डेथ की की टाइमलाइन इस नवम्बर से ११ साल की हो गई है. अब वह स्टेट में वायलेंस के अगेंस्ट पब्लिक मूवमेंट की एक सिंबल हो चुकी हैं. इरोम के कई ऐसे पहलू हैं जिनके बारे में शायद कम लोगों को ही पता है. इरोम एक सोशल एक्टिविस्ट के अलावा एक अच्छी पोएट भी हैं. शायद दुनिया भर में उनपर कविताएं लिखी जाती हैं पर उनकी कविताएं उन सारी कविताओं से अलग हैं.
इरोम 2 नवम्बर 2000 को आर्म फोर्सेस की ज्यादती के खिलाफ एक आमरण अनशन पर बैठी थीं. उनकी मांग थी कि नार्थ ईस्ट में आर्म फोर्सेस को दिये गये स्पेशल पावर्स को वापस ले लिया जाए और वहां शान्ति की बहाली की जाए. सरकार ने उनकी मांगे मानने से इंकार कर दिया और इरोम ने अपना अनशन वापस लेने से. इरोम को आत्महत्या करने के प्रयास में अरेस्ट कर लिया गया. वे जब भी आजाद की जाती हैं, आमरण अनशन पर बैठ जाती हैं और इस तरह उन्हे फिर से गिरफ्तार कर लिया जाता है.

Poem-1
When life comes to its end
You, please transport
My lifeless body
Place it on the soil of Father Koubru
To reduce my dead body
To cinders amidst the flames
Chopping it with axe and spade
Fills my mind with revulsion
The outer cover is sure to dry out
Let it rot under the ground
Let it be of some use to future generations
Let it transform into ore in the mine
I'll spread the fragrance of peace
From Kanglei, my birthplace
In the ages to come
It will spread all over the world.

Tonight
This adjoining night of two centuries
I hear all heart touching sounds in my ears
Thee, the beloved goddess, called time
Your poor girl is stirred at this hour
This late night makes me so restless
Cannot forget the world of captivity
Those shedding tears
When birds flap their wings
Those asking
What this walkable legs for?
Those sayings
These eyes are useless
Oh Prison! you go just vanish
So cruel is the strength of yours
Of iron bars and chains
Tear many a lives untimely
