The phrase Delhi Belly, according to Hanklyn – Janklin dictionary, is ‘a stomach disorder sometimes afflicting newcomers to the capital’. Infectious amoebic agents
Foreigners move from place to place and want to try the taste of flavors of the city in the messy and smelly gullies. Their delicate stomachs are not use to spices which tingles their taste buds. This excitement of trying something new lands them in trouble and they get trapped in the clutches of Delhi Belly. It can be fatal as it results in frequent vomitings and motions which makes your body dehydrated and also results in muscular spasm in legs.
Delhi Belly has no record of the phrase’s first appearance. The section on diseases in A Gazetteer of Delhi 1883-84 mentions in Delhi Boil, not Delhi Belly.
Delhi Belly is now dead as now hygiene standards are high, bottled water is available everywhere, dhabas cater to foreigners and many eateries serve gol gappas with mineral water. Despite the fact of hygiene awareness people still love to enjoy some particular food in gullies which are not so hygienic than in any famous restaurant with all ease.
